Title: Exploration of Alternative Representations for Generative Components' Symbolic View

Abstract:

Generative Components (GC) is a parametric computer-aided design application that employs a symbolic view to visualize the structure of a 3D model. The design of the GC symbolic view makes it difficult for users to navigate and understand the organization of a model when there are more than a few elements in that model. We undertook research to understand the limitations of the GC symbolic view, and to develop alternative representations that would make it easier for users to interpret. We described principles of visual representation, reviewed some recent research in graph visualization, interviewed GC users, and summarized our survey of software applications that employ graph representations. Eventually, we developed a number of interactive prototypes.

So in our presentation we are going to describe the results of our investigation and to demonstrate interactive prototypes we developed. Our presentation can be useful for everyone conducting research the field of parametric CAD software as well as for people interested in visualization and perception issues.

Bio:

Karine Kozlova is a SIAT Ph.D. student who earned an engineering degree in Moscow.

Her research is related to design space exploration. In particular she is interested in the interaction tools for CAD software that can help designers communicate with the system more effectively. Her current research is about ”shape schema grammars” which is related to construction of shapes and algorithms to represent operations on them.

Roham Sheikholeslami is a SIAT Masters student who has also earned a masters degree in architecture in Tehran. His research is about design computation and parametric design software applications. He is interested in alternative exploration and design space exploration, more specifically in architectural domain. His main research topic is discovering how tools such as CAD software applications can aid designers through their design process.
