Research Colloquium at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology, SFU Surrey presents:

Philippe Pasquier

November 5, 2008 at 2:30 pm

SFU Surrey Campus, Room 5380 (5th Floor Galleria)

    • From AI to IA ** Slides (not available yet)

Rather then focusing on one particular work, this presentation will propose an in-breath survey of Philippe Pasquier's past and ongoing scientific work. First, a coherentist (as opposed to foundationalist) agent theory will be briefly introduced along with a model of the cognitive aspects of agent communication pragmatics (i.e., a theory of the use of language). This work rests on a knowledge transfer from motivational theories in cognitive science (in particular the dissonance theory in social psychology) to artificial intelligence (AI). It will then be shown how this approach can help modeling interactions and managing interdependencies in mutli-agent systems. Previous work on dialogue game-based agent communication language, social commitment-based social control, the modeling of persuasion, argumentation and interest-based negotiation will be discussed.

Current and ongoing work will be addressed in a second part. First, human computation will be introduced. The idea of human computation is to use video games players to solve problems for which computers are not good at as a side effect of their gaming. A new game will be briefly presented that has been designed for ontology extraction. Finally, while artificial intelligence aims to make "machines do things that would require intelligence if done by humans" (Minsky, 1963), metacreation is a new field devoted to endow machines with creative behavior (as opposed to strictly intelligent or rational ones). A couple of recent realizations in interactive arts (IA) will exemplify this idea and the related issues.

Philippe Pasquier is an Assistant Professor at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology, SFU.
