Abstract:
This presentation will give an overview of media arts practice in Australia, with a focus on Experimenta, Australia's leading contemporary arts organisation dedicated to commissioning, exhibiting and promoting media art. Since 1986 Experimenta has promoted new media and digital arts through a vibrant program of exhibitions, screenings, artist commissions and exhibition tours, nationally and internationally. Through presentation of Experimenta's activities and other Australian media art events the talk will provide an introduction to the main media art organizations in Australia and some of Australia's leading and emerging media artists.
Bio:
Emma McRae has been working with new media for over 10 years and is currently Curatorial & Project Coordinator with Experimenta Media Arts. In this position she has coordinated the highly successful Experimenta Vanishing Point National Tour to 5 states in Australia, the Experimenta: Under the Radar tour of Australian media art to the UK in 2006 and Experimenta Playground, launched in Melbourne in August 2007. Emma co- curated both Experimenta Playground (2007) and Experimenta Vanishing Point (2005), and curated the Oz Digital Shorts program for the 53rd Sydney Film Festival (2006).
Emma has previously worked on project management for exhibitions including I Thought I Knew but I Was Wrong, an ACMI/Asialink touring exhibition of Australian video art, and she is currently on the board of Seventh Gallery, an artist-run-initiative in Melbourne. Her video artworks have been screened and performed at galleries and festivals nationally and internationally including ISEA, Japan; Futuresonic, UK; Electrofringe, Australia; Champ Libre, Canada; Root X, UK; Next Wave, Australia; and Gwangju Biennale, Korea. Emma has a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy and Cultural Studies) from The University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Arts (Media Arts) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), and a Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (History and Philosophy of Science) from The University of Melbourne. http://experimenta.org
