Title: The Ethics of Aesthetics

Abstract:

This lecture presents the relationships between ethics, aesthetics, and new media art. The presentation is based on “The e Decision,” a book by Don Ritter that uses an observational approach to the aesthetics of artworks with an emphasis on works created with new media technologies. The content of “The e Decision” is derived from the fields of art, psychology, philosophy, aesthetics and new media technologies, and from intensive interviews with new media curators from North America, Europe and Asia. Specific topics will include the process of aesthetic judgment, influences and consequences of aesthetic judgments, and the ethics of aesthetics. Writing of “The e Decision” received supported from Pratt Institute (New York City), Banff Centre (Canada), ZKM (Germany), and the Canada Council.
