    • Configuration and Implementation of Computer Supported Cooperative Work Systems in Health Informatics:

Lessons from the Field about Designing for Use** Slides

Failure rates of large scale computer systems are well documented. Computer supported information technology systems in the health sector have been particularly challenging to implement successfully. Ethnographic fieldwork in health sector workplaces undertaken in Canada and Australia has yielded insights about the challenges of configuring and implementing information systems for use in health sector workplaces. In this talk, I draw on examples from ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in several health sector workplaces to illustrate some of the challenges of configuring and implementing health sector information systems. I will outline how two frameworks-- 1 which addresses issues arising in configuring IT systems in healthcare, and the other which relates to the broader arenas in which health information technology systems are developed and used-- can aid stakeholders in thinking though health information technology deign and implementation.
